Estúdio 56

Condomínio Parque Jardim Botânico, 56 – Rio de Janeiro

The place where the  work was done during this semester is a ceramic atelier, situated on Condomínio Parque Jardim Botânico,  number 56.  Our project intercessor is Zaira Barion. She is also the owner and coordinator of the classes that happen on the atelier.

Several kinds of  ceramic pieces are made during the classes.  They vary from simple plates and jars to even detailed sculptures. During the classes we witnessed, Zaira taught her students how to enamel the pieces after they come out of the oven, how to use sandpaper and how to paint them after they dried.

From a set of words that compose Zaira’s words universe, we recognized as a theme for our project: “The care breaks bad effects”. She’s usually worried about the final details of the pieces, always telling her students to don’t forget to make the pieces hollow, to remove the excess of clay, and to make it very smooth.

At the end of the first “hot and cold” we identified our objective: to explain to the students about the basics of clay manipulation.  At the end of the second “hot and cold”, Zaira chose as the hottest object a sequence of steps of her classes. So, our attention turned even more to the process of manufacturing ceramic pieces, being the sequence of steps our chosen base, chosen according to our intercessor and teacher. From variations of form and content we produced our final product.

Concluding, from all the variations done, we built a canvas panel  with portraits of the steps of ceramic manufacturing, with a piece of bamboo on each end used to hang the product wherever our intercessor chooses.  Lately it’s being exhibited in the walls of Zaira’s atelier, open to everyone see.

This experience served to make me learn that we always need to be experimenting with the unknown, not just stick with the theory. That we need to make mistakes in order to grow up and learn, and that nothing can be made alone. I thank Zaira for all the time we shared on this semester, what made me fell satisfaction that I’ll always have towards her and all her students. I also thank Mariana for this time when we accomplished the project together, and for her friendship, which made me happy.

Making a project is following you intuition and believing your own creativity. Besides that, we need to trust in the process and never to give up. I thank Anderson for always be by my side and help me with the project, making me fell as a friend. I thank Zaira for her collaboration on this project, which made me very happy.
