Projeto Longevidade – Núcleo Vila Isabel

Praça Barão de Drumond – Vila Isabel

While coursing PUC's Design graduation course, I started my work under the longevity project in Vila Isabel at Barão de Drummond square. My chosen partner was André Luiz Nunes, who teaches physical education to the third age. Every monday, wednesday and fridays, a large group of old ladies (forty to sixty ladies) meets at the square, working out in order to maintain their health and happiness. They work out from 7 am to 7:50 am, when they get a 10 minutes rest, followed by more exercises which goes throught for more 50 minutes, though only a few (about 20) ladies stay so long. While they rest, there's another activity, which Luiz calls "Chat Therapy", where the ladies change experiences and start new relationships. While I was observing their activities, I happened to get the idea of André's work. I realized they're not usual students, having much more needs, they're much more fragile and sucetible  individuals, physically. Working out is not only about avoiding health problems, but, also, work out their minds. Due to the small amount of time I had, we worked three steps in one, quickly getting to his vocabulary and easily building the objective-phrase: "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, work out, breath happily". The phrase means their need to maintain that contact with the outside world, so that they won't feel unhappy and alone, while avoiding physiological problems and diseases. Following this line, I started designing the "baits", like the hula hoop, rope, hand rubber-band, etc. After all that testing and the outcome of the "hot-cold", I got the chosen path, which incorporated all the three baits above. Throught the variations I got from this new gear, some considerations were achieved: their fragility, their necessity for support for the activities, meaning the overall security and simplicity of a self-explanatory design item. Counting on colors (bright blue), weight (clove and cinnamon) and smell, this item should work out their senses, just as this soft hoop was designed for. Working with elder people had been a fulfilling and amazing experience, as I could understand a different world, a different view of other's needs.
