Our project was done at Ruy Medina’s Gym Class, located at Ipanema, on Visconde de Pirajá street, 462 / 201 where people were very welcoming and nice to us. We worked with Ruy himself, that seemed to understand and be interested in our project, what motivated us. Besides owning the gym, Ruy teaches the form fitness classes, witch we watched and followed during 6 months. The students were women between 30 and 40 years old and were from 5 to 7 per class.

Beside the class that we watched during this period, the gym also offers other classes like bodybuilding, capoeira, step and others.

During classes, Ruy did extension , sustention and lifting exercises using objects like weights and sticks.

After knowing Ruy’s vocabulary universe we chose with him the theme phrase for the project: “With laziness you get nothing”. The phrase resumes a little of every exercise done in class, because Ruy was always motivating and stimulating his students.

After testing several objects enclosing all types of materials like: MDF, foam, elastics, hangers and paperboard we decided that the next objects would be related with the extension exercise, and therefore with the elastics.

From that point forward we built several objects using different types off elastics (two types of rubber bands, clothes elastics and garotte) but we chose to do an extensor that would be bonded on feet by straps and bond together by an garotte.

To the construction the object was divided into two parts, the strap and the elastic that afterwards was bounded by a key chain.

The strap was done with a rectangular piece of denim with 25cmx7cm sewed with two 20cm  Velcro straps. Between the two velcros we put two eyelets were the key chain would be put.

The elastic was folded in the edges and bonded. It measured 30cm and was covered with an fabric strap to avoid contact of the rubber with skin.

Após a montagem de ambas as partes, o anel foi colocado por dentro dos ilhoses (de espessura 5mm) e a abertura do garrote.

All 7 pieces were done the same way.

At the final testing Ruy told us the product was great and showed us another use for it: bonding the straps on the fists. He also sowed us all the different uses for it (stretching in the front, on sides, on the back upwards etc.) in different positions (standing, holding the bar, laid down, etc.).

Clarice Rodriguez :  Doing this to me was, besides dedicating myself to knowing a hole new universe, is opening my mind and eyes to see trough other persons eyes. This way we make sure we can make some difference for someone, somewhere for some time and knowing this is what I chose for a career really satisfies me.  I’m thankful for Giulia’s support during all the period what made me and her more friends. I’m thankful for the opportunity Ruy gave us, what made me grow up by entering a new place with new eyes.

Giulia Madalozzo: This semester I learned a lot inside and outside class. At the gym I learned a lot about the human body, its moves, about fitness classes, its objects and motivation. In the classes teachers help and knowledge helped a lot as much as the workshops and tests. Beside all that I could got to know different types of elastics and a little bit of sewing. I’m thankful for Clarice’s friendship, because without it nothing of this could be possible. I’m thankful for Ruy’s support what made the project possible.
