The project was made at Creche Lua Solidária de Botafogo, with the assistance of the Educator Paulla Cristhiny Silva dos Santos. The institution provides Primary Education for kids within the range from 2 to 6 years old, whose parents work in the neighborhood Botafogo. Classes start at 7:30 am and end at 16:00pm. Paulla uses a methodology which consists in stimulating creativeness, education, human values and personal skills. Among the activities we have been observing, “Reporting a Story” was one of the most interesting, since she asked them to help her out describing the characters while she reads the text. Based on the set of words Paulla usually uses to communicate with her students, we selected as the theme for our project: Masks that Stimulate Drinking More Water, which in Portuguese would be: Masks that Stimulate Drinking more Water We associated the sentence, DRINKING MORE WATER, with the Train activity. In this, Paulla organizes a line, where kids walk through singing popular lyrics or even songs she made up. Then, they follow up to the recreation area, where they need to drink more water. We started out a set of experiments in order to analyze the way Paulla reaches her objects during her class. We made masks using a material called EVA (a special type of foam), which were used to “dress” a clay filter. The masks are 3 aquatic animals: an octopus, a whale and an alligator. The idea of using masks is to excite them to use the faucet that comes out from the animals’ mouths. Our aim was making this a special moment, providing autonomy and also increasing the number of times they drink water. The school’s director Antonia Andrade, Paulla and us decided to install the filter in the Dining Room and also to change its mask weekly.
Living this experience was learning, in practice, what the Design Core is and also figuring out the creative process. I thank to Gabriel for the fact we managed the completeness of this project, generating at me gratitude. I thank to Paula for the fact she has been an exceptional link between us and the kids, generating at me admiration. The project worked for my self development, helping me to risk without being afraid of committing mistakes. Before it, I had never lived such experience. I would like to thank Suelen for working hard and responsibly, generating at me an equivalent desire. I would like to thank teacher Paulla for receiving us cordially, generating at me respect for everybody else at school.
