Our project took place in the Escola Jardim dos Pirilampos, a daycare center located on the Rua João Borges, near the Clínica São Vicente. Our intercessor was Fátima Geralda de Sousa, an educator who accompanies the older children that are in the “Jardim”.
Fátima would begin her day with the kids at 9 in the morning, taking them up to a classroom on the second floor of the daycare center. There she would ask the children to organize the tables in a “family” way, which means that they would lineup the tables and chairs soa as to form a long table in which the children could all sit down in the same table and interact amongst themselves. The activities realized in the daycare center were always varied and tied to the development of motor skills, memory, and the child’s creativity. We were able to see paper cutting classes, the children playing with puddy, drawing classes, and even a class that occurred in the herb garden at the center whilst we were there observing during this semester.
We were able to reach a sentence on which to base our project on through Fátima’s extensive vocabulary, the following sentence being the one chosen to represent us:
“The doll talks to us”
Fátima would ask the children to cut pieces of old magazines so as to form body parts and then glue them on a piece of paper and arrange them so that they would form a human figure.
We, Jessica and I, created objects from different materials, forming the figure of a “boneco” (a doll) or anything intimately related to telling stories.
Our final object was a story-telling kit made to be worn. It was made out of propeline, and sown with different fabrics and textures. Fátima uses this kit to better the stories she tells the children.
Jessica:Being in the Projeto class is observing the activities and trying to find solutions. It was a surprise to be in this class because I found simple solutions to facilitate the activities my intercessor took part in. I learned that through an intensive trial and error session I could come to a common denominator.
Bernardo: Being in the Projeto class is learning how to listen to the intercessor (the client) and with that do a job for him/her that is up to their standards, if not exceeding it. I was glad with the choice we made to work with the daycare center, I learned that I shouldn’t impose limits on myself, that even though I may enter a project with an idea already ingrained in my head of how it should be, it doesn’t necessarily mean I’m going to be able to follow it, so I should open up my horizons and stop being stubborn.
