This work was developed by Rigel Romeu at “Escola Municipal Uruguai”, in cooperation with Geography Professor Ana Valéria Félix, who lectures fundamental school students throughout the 2nd semester of 2008. The professor teaches her students course contents as well as how to become better citizens and care for our planet. This was the greatest motivation to choose her lecture as a research location. During the visits to the school, the contextualization of the course contents, reality and attitudes that the students had to develop to improve the world were observed. Following the group of words that compose the vocabulary universe of Ana Valéria, I recognize as project theme: “Making a difference is learning and teaching to receive and distribute kindness”. This content was approached during discussions about developing countries X underdeveloped countries, child labor, IDH, amongst others. The idea of building a flannel board where antagonistic situations could be worked upon using images, phrases, words and with the active participation of the students. The final product was made following the fusion of two experiments. A flannel board was made with a projected tree on which the students could correlate images of current problems such as pollution, deforestation, global warming, violence and urban density, as well as solution proposals, to images of desired situations such as preserved wild animals, recycling, reforestation and care towards society and the planet, together with proposals for its maintenance. We tried to associate the problem images to dried leaves and good images to flowers and green leaves. The water drops, kindness, feed the tree and the society. The panel and the tree were made of felt. The flowers and leaves with felt and “Brescia”, and acetate envelopes in which to insert words and images. The drops were made of synthetic material. Velcro was used to fix the elements. The professor uses the product through a drawing of the elements between the students who arrange the elements of the flannel board in the way they identify the problems and their solutions. I have learned to identify the wish of the professor, by accompanying her activities, getting to know the project and becoming involved with it. Several experiments led to the final product, always thinking of situations where they would be used. My perception of interesting experiments was not always perceived that way by the professor. Observation of the hot and cold stages was fundamental for understanding the intercessor’s choice. Various studies of different shapes, materials and techniques should be done for the development of each element of the product. Exchanging ideas and learning to observe and listen to other people expands the analysis of the project’s functionality and its elements in the activity.

I thank Prof. Ana Valéria Félix for the opportunity to do this work, for the way she received me and followed the stages of this process. Furthermore, for showing us that, despite the difficulties encountered at public schools, it is possible to teach with joy, mobilization and in search of a better world.
