This project was developed at the Municipal School Capistrano de Abreu, located at 984 Pacheco Leão Street inJardim Botânico, Rio de Janeiro. Our partner in this project was the Physical Education teacher, Ana Lúcia Coelho.

Ana works in the mornings, classes are composed of students from first to fifth year of elementary school. Classes run from 7am to noon, and we agreed to attend the 8am classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The classes are characterized by an initial stretching followed by various activities. For example, the introduction of ancient games as leap frog and drop top, and other activities that involve balance and body movement.

From the set of words that makes up Ana Lucia’s vocabulary universe we recognize, as our theme for the project, the phrase: “You better learn to balance your body in motion”.

Several activities given by Ana were connected to the phrase chosen, such as: activities with acrobatic trampoline, carry a friend on the back, jump over the bench and stretching.

After the experimentation of our first ideas, we realized that the concept that should be taken as the goal was the creation of objects that involve balancing the body as whole, not specific parts. Thus, experimental changes were made in order to reach a final prototype.

This final object is a large wood circle associated with a semi-sphere that stays below it. The objective of this prototype is to have kids trying to stay steady simultaneously. That is, in order to reach this equilibrium, children should join hands and organize themselves. The whole object was made of plywood and finishing with Curupixá wood sheet and sealer.

The prototype is being used by Ana Lúcia in the following way: she organizes groups that should try to maintain balance while standing or sitting. Thus, she can reconcile the body balance and organization of her students.
