Summary:

Our project was made at the Municipal School Republic of Colombia with Teacher Patrícia Souza. She was a teacher of the first grade of elementary school for children of approximately five years. Patrícia’s classes did not follow a script. One day the childrens would study using their respective handouts, on the other they drew, she would also tell stories, leaving them free to play. Each day Patrícia proposed to them what was most appropriate for the day. Some examples of activities that we have seen Patrícia doing were activities suitable for children of about five years old. For example playwith stuffed animals and make handouts. Because Patrícia is dealing with children, the proposed activities were appropriated to that age. Stories, drawings, toys, exercise. It was all part of Patrícia's education system. From the set of words that make up Patrícia’s vocabulary universe, we recognized as the theme of the project: “The Children’s Draw Arrange and Speaks about the Story” An example of an activity that Patrícia have done and related to the chosen phrase was when she told a story to the children and then gave papers so that they could draw the story, draw the characters or what they absorbed about the story. This activity was related to the phrase, because from their draws, they could arrange the story and tell it again or even invent a new one. From the experimentations of the first ideas we have seen which of these experiments were better related to Patrícia’s class and the project theme. Thus, from the dynamic we defined the concept of the object used as the basis; a transparent frame, letters and a type of toy. Relating to the phrase, the frame represents the children's draw, the letters the speech, and the toy represents the story. So, the phrase "The children's draw arrange and speaks about the story" is visible. With that in mind, we made 5 frames of transparent acetate, with gray carpet sewn edges, with velcro at the ends, enabling the moviment of the parts and also enabling that they fit. So Patrícia and the kids involve drawings and stories in different ways on the same object. Patrícia would distribute the frames and pillors, putting a frame and a pilot on each table. The children would sit and hear what Patricia had to say; "Remember the story I told? So I want you to do christmas draws. Beautiful and well done". And so, the children made drawings as Christmas trees, Santa Claus and snowman. Finally we would join the parts and put them in a sequence.

Who sees an object thats already done, can not see everything that it represents, only if you get involved in the creation process you can learn the lessons and contexts that make it the embodiment of an entire knowledge sharing and moments. Living this experience made me know the spontaneity of children, the difficulties of public education, but especially the importance of the involvement of those who participate in the project, such as interference, no matter how small, can completely change the trajectory of creation. The product done, carries with it a whole story of it’s creation. Knowing that it has a piece of you and people who somehow put a bit of themselves in it too, makes a simple object have an significant value. The motivation that moved me to the final conclusion came by the project itself and all it brought, every step and result, every day I left Patricia’s class and the class between the trees, and working on the lab, knowing that in the final result of all this work, it would have an incalculable sentimental value, and that in fact has. I thank Patricia for the final result, which interfered in her class in such a positive way, seeing the evolution of all of us, in an academic or human form, all of this experience brought me happiness and fulfillment, knowing that we are able to look with sympathy and gratitude, in a way to promote the work of someone we admire. I thank Olivia for the process, that we were able to do averything in a productive and enjoyable way. I know that without her it would not be the same, which leads me, understand that work in pair is joining knowledge and experience, differences of each, in search of a common goal.

Olivia:

For me, living this experience was something enriching. I made a social internship with children of Morro Dona Marta in 2011, but I have never worked so close with children as I worked in this experience. Going twice a week in one location, which in the beginning was an exotic place, different for me, after a while began to turn a common place, as if I've coexisted with those children for years. The affection they have is amazing. The gratitude they showed when we took the experiments was exciting. They played with the experiments as if they were the coolest "toys" they have ever seen in their lives. Be part of the joy of someone is inexplicable. It was exhausting, was laborious, but above all, it was a pleasure to work with children and a teacher that was so lovely and always said nice things about our experiments. I can say that I was lucky to have the duo I had, the teacher and the children we worked with. Luck is the word that best sums up this experience for me. Luck, learning, achievement, capacity. I felt happy with everything I learned during this period living with these people who I had never spoken before and now have become my friends. Seeing that I am able to do everything I have done, with the help of my partner, of course, was also extremely important for me. This mixture of feelings made me feel good and that I fulfilled an important role in my life. After all, nothing is better than making someone happy. This exchange of affection, kindness and willingness made everything better. I thank Patrícia for all the patience and affection that she had with us. Her goodwill and her always positive attitude made me have an special feeling for her. I thank Mariana for the dedication she had with our work. Without her, I wouldn’t be able to do even half of what we did. Working with her was very good, because we understand each other very well. This generated in me a sense of joy to know that our partnership worked so well.
